Mortgages
A mortgage is probably the biggest financial
commitment you are likely to make in your whole life. So this
makes choosing the right mortgage an important process. There is
no right and wrong way to go about this, but all of the leading
mortgage professionals and financial institutions do not charge
for their service, so our advice is shop around, it won’t cost
you anything and could save you a packet!. A couple of points of a
percentage point here and there won’t make a massive difference
to your monthly repayments, but over the term of your mortgage
these will mount up, so getting the best deal is always advisable.
That being said, one should not always measure a deal by the
interest rate payable, there is much more that must be taken into
account, such as tie-in periods and early redemption penalties. A
feature of quite a few mortgages is to try to lock you in for a
fixed period of time, whether it be 2 or 3 years etc. This
basically, prevents you from freely paying your mortgage back and
moving to a different lender in this time frame. You can obviously
do this, but would incur an early redemption penalty, which in a
lot of cases would wipe out any cost saving of moving to a
different lender in the first place!
The first step in the hunt for mortgages, a lot would say, is
to work out how much you can afford to borrow based on your income
and other outgoings. It is always worth making a few of these
calculations, aided by a mortgage calculator, as incomes and other
outgoings can vary from time to time as do the interest rates
payable on mortgages, so it makes sense to see how much, or how
little, you can afford to borrow before looking for your next
house or re-mortgage.
